Safety in Costa Rica

The biggest hesitation many people have when considering visiting Costa Rica, investing in Costa Rica, or relocating to Costa Rica is the level of safety they can be assured. Most are pleasantly surprised to learn that safety in Costa Rica is better and more secure than many other countries in the world--including the United States of America!

Americans and individuals from other countries are relocating to Costa Rica all the time, and many credit the safety in Costa Rica that they experienced when previously visiting Costa Rica for helping them take the plunge and move down there part- or full-time.

While it would be a lie to say there are no drugs in Costa Rica, crime in Costa Rica as a result of the minimal drug trade is almost unheard of, and if it does happen, it is limited to the criminals involved with drugs in Costa Rica. People living in Costa Rica or visiting Costa Rica are very rarely the victims of violent crime. In fact, violent crime in Costa Rica is so rare that you barely hear about it, unlike the United States, where violence and murder are highlighted each night on the evening news.

Costa Ricans are largely a peace-loving people, and Costa Rica has not been involved in a war, either civil or with other nations, for as long as anyone living in Costa Rica can remember. In fact, Costa Rica has not even had a standing army since 1949! This means that when you’re living in Costa Rica or visiting Costa Rica, you will never see armed military personnel walking around anywhere--because the military has no need to exist.

In many countries around the world, it’s not uncommon to hear so much talk about terrorism and the threats of terrorists that just waking up in the morning can seem dangerous. Not in Costa Rica! Terrorism is of little concern to people living in Costa Rica, because the country is a peaceful one and not a terrorist target in any way. Because it’s not a threat to their way of life, Costa Ricans rarely discuss terrorism, and it rarely makes the local news broadcasts.

The lack of violent crime in Costa Rica is just one more reason why investing in Costa Rica is such a safe bet. There are no high-crime areas people will avoid purchasing land or homes in, and no parts unsafe for visiting Costa Rica. An investment in real property in Costa Rica will never be threatened by the government, by drug lords, or by local criminals.

All in all, your safety in Costa Rica is always protected, whether you’re relocating to Costa Rica or just visiting Costa Rica. Leave all your stigmas of Latin American countries behind you in America, and enjoy a true sense of safety in Costa Rica!
